POMH Auxiliary's 37th Annual Tour of Interesting Places

When:
Thursday, August 1, 2019 10:00 AM thru 04:00 PM
Where:
Six private homes around Frankfort will be open to the public for walk-throughs between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Aug. 1, 2019 for the 37thannual “Tour of Interesting Places,” presented by the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Tour guests are invited to visit the diverse selection of residences, which include three waterfront properties on Crystal Lake, all originally mid-twentieth century summer cottages, and each uniquely enlarged and renovated; an ultra-contemporary ranch; a 1930s-era Art Deco-style home on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan; and an in-town Victorian built in 1865.  Art lovers and nostalgia buffs alike will delight in this year’s ‘Tour of Interesting Places,’” said Sharon Grajcar, event chair. “The homes of three local award-winning artists – Ellie Harold, Ann Loveless and Steve Loveless – are featured this year. And one of the beachfront homes is a showcase for Japanese and Chinese porcelain artifacts.  In addition, Grajcar added, “Stormcloud’s beautiful and energy efficient new brewery off of M-115 will also be open to Tour guests.” Southern SinThesis’ food truck is scheduled to be on site as well. Restrooms are also available for Tour participants.  The Auxiliary is very grateful to the six homeowners and to Rick Schmitt at Stormcloud for opening their doors for this year’s fundraising Tour,” said Grajcar.  Tickets for the Tour of Interesting Places can be purchased before the event for $20 at Hull’s of Frankfort, the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, Crystal Crate and Cargo in Beulah, or online at www.munsonhealthcare.org/pauloliverhometour. Tickets can also be purchased on the day of the event at any home on the tour, for an additional fee.  Tour guests must be at least 12 years of age and no cameras are permitted.

Crystal Lake Woodies and Michigan Boatbuilding Program

The Benzie Area Historical Society is offering “Crystal Lake Woodies and Michigan Boatbuilding” at the “boat barn” of local resident Jon Peele on Friday, August 2, 6-8:00 p.m.  Guests will be able to view his collection of vintage racing and wooden power boats dating back to the 1930s as well accessories, books, and memorabilia.   Peele’s interest and passion for boating began when he was a child summering in Beulah and admired the large inboards made of varnished mahogany on Crystal Lake.  As a teenager, he and friends formed a water skiing team that performed at Beulah water events making use of a neighbor’s small Chris Craft.  His love for these beautiful crafts has only grown through the years as has his collection, started with his brother Jim.

All of the boats in Peele’s collection have been restored by professional boat restorers with great care taken to restore them to what they looked like when they left their builder’s plant.  All have their original engine or an engine built by the same company during the same time period.

Doors open at 6:00, and at 7:00 p.m., Peele will present “Michigan Boat Building” which will highlight Michigan’s role as the epicenter of boat building in our country with companies such as Century in Manistee, Chris Craft and Ventnor.

Ned Edwards will give a brief presentation with photos of the Classic Boats of Crystal Lake, of which there are now about 25, from a 1930 Chris Craft Runabout to a 2015 Grand Craft Utility.  These mahogany wood boats were all built in Michigan and many have been restored by highly skilled craftsmen, including Mike Green of Traverse City, who is the great grandson of Chris Smith, founder of Chris Craft.  Most of the owners of these boats are members of the Water Wonderland Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, International, of which Ned is a board member and secretary.

The event will be held at Peele’s boat barn located on Center St, Beulah, across from The Granary and behind The Depot.  Admission is by donation and will benefit the Benzie Area Historical Society & Museum.  For more information, contact the Benzie Area Historical Society at 231.882.5539.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - THE BEST WEEK OF SUMMER!

Children in our community are invited to venture into the wilds of Africa during “ROAR:  LIFE  IS  WILD - GOD  IS  GOOD” Vacation Bible School, hosted by Blaine Christian Church, Monday, August 5 - Thursday, August 8, 2019, from 6 - 8:10 pm each evening.

Children, ages 3 - 6th grade completed, are welcome to enjoy the  BEST  week of the summer at no cost.  Pre-K and Kindergarten age children will enjoy activities designed especially for them in “Little Paws” Pre-school.  Each evening at 5:30 pm, a light supper will be available for children attending VBS.

Registration is each night from 5:30 - 5:50 pm at the church.  Blaine Christian Church is located at 7018 Putney Road (corner of Joyfield and Putney Roads), in Arcadia.

Based on the theme of “Life Is Wild - God Is Good”, during  “ROAR”  Vacation Bible School, children will go in small groups on an African adventure to explore God’s goodness and celebrate a ferocious faith that can power them through this wild life.

They will make new friends, explore the Imagination Station and KidVid Cinema, enjoy Stampede Sports, make cool crafts to take home, sing fun songs during Sing And Play Roar, and enjoy the snacks at the Hungry Herd Café.

Since everything is designed to be hands-on, it is recommended that children dress in play clothes.

During their four days of fun, children will learn about giving and helping others by donating non-perishable food items each evening to help Benzie Area Christian Neighbors (BACN), located in Benzonia, provide food for those in need in our county.  There will also be a change jar for children to give donations to BACN.

On Sunday, August 11th, at 10 am, the children will wrap up their Vacation Bible School experience by singing their songs and sharing what they learned during a combined worship service.  This is open to the public.

If you have questions or need more info about Vacation Bible School, or if you need directions, please call 231/352-9148, or send an email to:  blainechurch@gmail.com, or check the church’s website at:  blainechristianchurch.org.

You and your family are welcome to get to know the church family at Blaine Christian Church on Sunday mornings at 8:30 am (contemporary style service), or at 10 am (blended style).  Separate activities, through “Kid’s Kare”, are provided at each service for children 2 - 6 years old.

Becoming Mary Sully

2019 Phil Talk “Becoming Mary Sully”
Like a Ted Talk, but with the famous Phil Deloria
A box of recently discovered colorful and dynamic abstract triptychs became a familial quest in unraveling “personality prints” of American public figures like Amelia Earhart, Babe Ruth and Gertrude Stein. Deloria has reclaimed that work from obscurity; exploring the stunning portfolio through the lenses of modernism, industrial design, Dakota women’s aesthetics, mental health, ethnography, anthropology, primitivism, and the American Indian politics of the 1930s. All are welcome to this evening of discovery and insight, free of charge.
