Annual Regional Student Art Exhibition

Annual Regional Student Art Exhibition

The Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts (OAC) will host its Annual Regional Student Art Exhibition from April 4th – April 30th. Hundreds of artworks in a wide variety of media from area elementary, middle, and high schools will be on display. Certificates of Excellence and awards, including scholarships to University of Olivet, and monetary awards from Blick Art Materials will be presented during the Opening Reception on Friday April 4th, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. This exhibit and reception is made possible through sponsorship by Graceland Fruit and A&W of Frankfort. 

Oliver Art Center is open

Lake Huron Mermaid Book Presentation

Empire area poet and author Anne-Marie Oomen and Grand Rapids poet and author Linda Nemec Foster will appear at the Oliver Art Center for a unique presentation on their new book Lake Huron Mermaid, a tale of lost sisters, lost amulets, underwater sinkholes, and new-found love of Big Water. Oomen and Foster return to the Benzie County region for this interactive presentation that will intrigue both readers and writers. Oomen and Foster are both award-winning writers. Anne-Marie Oomen was recently awarded the Michigan Author Award for Lifetime Achievement, 2023-24, while Foster was selected to be the first Poet Laureate of Grand Rapids, Michigan from 2003-2005 and has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. This event is free to the public (donations appreciated).

“Born and raised on the coast of Lake Michigan, -singer-songwriter Sierra Cassidy, grew up in a small and thriving arts-driven community. With the immersion in the local folk and roots festival scene, Sierra found inspiration for self-expression through song throughout her early years.., After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy, Sierra attended Berklee College of Music in both Boston, MA and Valencia, Spain. While studying songwriting and living abroad, Sierra discovered her affinity for “off-beat” pop” music…, Since releasing her first self-produced single in 2017, Sierra has shifted her role into the emblem “i.am.james.” creating a persona that allows for escapism, but also allows life to leak into her songs. Her music has been noted as “heart-ache to dance to,” and “left of center pop,” drawing influences from both her upbringing in folk music and her admiration for contemporary pop music.”
